Born 1924 Christchurch, New Zealand. Educated at Christchurch Technical College followed by Canterbury College, then a College of N.Z. University. After his Antarctic period described here he worked at the Dept. of Geodesy and Geophysics, Cambridge.
Always wanted to be an astronomer but had to settle for more earthly fields like geophysics. Also had minor army war-time service in the artillery.
